Performing Arts

At Rye Primary School, all students in Grades Prep to Six participate in weekly lessons in the Performing Arts, engaging in Music, Drama, Dance and Puppetry skills. In our well-equipped Music Room, with drums and percussion instruments, electronic keyboards and drum kit, ukuleles, boom whackers and large rehearsal space, students are given opportunity to learn about the Arts.

Following the AusVELS curriculum, students are taught the fundamentals of music such as beat, rhythm, tone, pitch and melody. Students enjoy playing tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments, reading rhythmic notation, listening and responding to music, creating their own compositions and singing. In addition to covering many concepts in music, drama is taught using team work and role-play scenarios. Students are challenged to improvise and think quickly when performing in front of their peers, encouraging confidence and drawing on personal experiences to link-in with their learning. Various genres of dance, drama, puppetry and music are taught in order for students to appreciate different cultures from around the world.

Social and Emotional Learning is covered through many group activities and team games. Partner and individual work is also used to reinforce learnt concepts.

Students at Rye Primary School have the opportunity to learn an instrument with trained instrumental music tutors. Private lessons offered at the school include guitar, piano, saxophone, drums, flute, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, singing and vocals. Many musical instruments are available for hire from the school.

Rye Primary School has a Choir and Band. They perform regularly at whole-school Assemblies and local community events. Several students who learn an instrument are invited to attend an annual inter-school Music Camp each year.

A bi-annual whole-school production is held featuring acting, set design, singing and dancing in which every student is encouraged to perform on stage using professional sound and lighting.
